Xiaomi Mi5 – 4 features which make it most powerful phone ever


The Chinese handset maker Xiaomi has launched its flagship smartphone called Xiaomi Mi5 and its Pro variant at Mobile World Congress 2016. While the handset looks quite a stunner owing to its curved glass and metal body, it also packs quite a punch when it comes to performance. This year around, the brand has equipped its flagship device with some features that are unique to it only and makes it stand apart. We will not be including the Snapdragon 820 processor here since all flagships launched at MWC this year are equipped with the same. This is a list of 4 features that are first for any smartphone and makes Xiaomi Mi5 a one of its kind handset. Read on to know about these features and make up your mind about the device.

Xiaomi Mi5 LPDDR4 RAM

All smartphones till date have been equipped with LPDDR3 RAM, which was changed last year when Samsung equipped Galaxy S6 and its variant with LPDDR4 RAM. For those who are wondering, please note that LPDDR4 RAM brings a huge advantage over LPDDR3 and it has been proved by Samsung Galaxy S6 last year. Now the next generation of RAM has been utilised by Xiaomi as well and we can expect the handset to be more power efficient and snappy. We say this because LPDDR4 RAM has been proven to be faster than a handset that has been equipped with LPDDR3 RAM. Expect Xiaomi Mi5 to match the performance offered by flagship devices manufactured by market leader itself. 

4-axis Optical Image Stabilisation

When Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) was introduced in smartphones, it was considered to be a breakthrough feature that enhanced the whole experience of mobile experience. Prior to the launch of OIS, if the camera was shaken while taking a picture, the outcome would be an extremely blurry picture. Now, if your smartphone has OIS, you no longer need to worry about blurry picture due to shaking hands. However, till date all OIS equipped smartphones could detect shaking movement along horizontal and vertical axis only, which means up-down and backward-front movement. Xiaomi Mi5 has been equipped with 4-axis OIS, which also adds movement from left to right in addition to horizontal and vertical movement, resulting in an all round 360 degree stabilisation. This is first of its kind for any smartphone. 

Deep Trench Isolation

This feature is related to camera as well since Xiaomi Mi5 has been equipped with Sony’s IMS298 sensor, which features the Deep Trench Isolation system. Only other smartphones to boast of this feature are the latest Apple iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Many of you must have noticed that however great the camera might be, in less than optimal lighting condition, images turn out to be grainy or noisy. Deep Trench Isolation prevent this from happening and as a result pictures taken with Mi5 are stunning to say the least. 

Universal Flash Storage 2.0

Universal Flash Storage 2.0 is to smartphones what solid state drives are to laptops. In other words, it is designed to offer unbelievable read and write speed as compared to conventional storage. This is yet another feature that Xiaomi has borrowed from Samsung’s last year’s flagship device. While other smartphones as well as some flagship devices are still relying on eMMC storage, Xiaomi has moved a step ahead into future with UFS 2.0.

The fact that these features are not available even in many high end premium smartphones and is being offered by Xiaomi Mi5 mobile under INR 25000 is an indication that tide is now turning. We would not be least bit surprised if Xiaomi soon topples most leading players in the market and it is already on the right track to do so.
